Adult Education Summer Education Series July 13

Continuing in our summer education series, “Stories of Faith,” we are hearing from a different parishioner each week and in response exploring for ourselves such questions as: What gives ultimate meaning to my life?  What do I do about God?  Who is Jesus for me?  What do I perceive that God has done for me?  How am I responding to God?  Why does church matter to me in all this?  Last week we heard Jennifer Daugherty share her story of faith and link it with a scripture passage. This coming Sunday, July 13, we will hear from Betty Hunter, pastoral care leader in the parish.  We meet in the Teen Center from 9:15 to 10:15.  Meditation in the Parlor.

Adult Education, July 6, 2008

Last week our Adult Education session laid the ground work as we looked at the need to be able to articulate the faith that lies within us, and how this summer series gives us a safe and nurturing environment within which to practice actually talking about what is at the heart of faith for each of us.  This coming Sunday, July 6, in the next of our summer series, “Stories of Faith,” we will hear Jennifer Daugherty share her story of faith.  We will link this with a scripture passage and reflect on our own faith stories.  We meet in the Teen Center from 9:15 to 10:15.  Meditation is in the Parlor.

Adult Education, June 29, 2008

This week is the next in our summer series: “Stories of Faith.” We explore together a model for sharing faith stories based on a key Gospel passage, Jesus and his disciples on the road to Caesarea Philippi, and the question, “Who do you say that I am?” A discussion regarding talking about our experience of Jesus and the meaning of faith outside of using churchy and theological language. This Sunday we will meet in the Teen Center at 9:15. Meditation will be in the Parlor, 9:15 to 10:15 AM. In the following Sundays this summer look for individual Emmanuelites sharing their stories of faith, and presentations by the Green Emmanuel committee and by guest speakers on the issues of homelessness and Tent City 4.

Congratulations Seniors!

On June 8, Emmanuel honored its members who graduated from high school this year.

The Rev. Mary Shehane, campus minister at Crossroads (University of Washington, Seattle) spoke at adult education and also as preacher at both morning services. Seniors joined the congregation in renewing their Baptismal Vows, making promises to continue to grow in their faith in the new places where they will find themselves. Seniors were presented with Bibles (a longstanding Emmanuel tradition) and candles ( a symbol for Christ's light in their lives and that each of us should let our light shine forth in the world). Senior Acolytes also received Emmanuel's Acolyte Cross. After the Eucharist, the community gathered for a festive reception. Congratulations Seniors: Matt Sims, Helen Strausz, Becca Hall, Caroline Kangas, Lara Felker, Victoria Bachman, William Ranniger, Grace Wandell, Christopher Fricke-Yang and Rachel Cochran!

Adult Christian Education,Sunday, June 15

This Sunday will be the first of our new summer series: “Stories of Faith, Introducing Our New Rector.” The Rev. Hunt Priest will share his faith story with us connecting it with biblical stories of faith. Then will follow a series of Sunday morning education hours in which others in the congregation each share their own personal faith stories, and we explore together faith stories of individuals in the Bible. This Sunday only we will meet in the Narthex (entrance) at 9:15, since the parish hall is being set up for the picnic following the 10:30 Eucharist. Meditation will be in the Parlor, 9:15 to 10:15 AM.

Next week, June 22, there will be two different options during the education hour. Option #1: The Green Committee will meet in the Teen Center, following up on previous adult education sessions. This will be a planning meeting open also to all parishioners with a passion for the environment. Included in the agenda is action planning for helping Emmanuel be a Green Congregation. Option #2: The “prayer partners” of the Sunday Morning Prayer Ministry will be meeting in CE2 classroom. This too is a meeting open to others who are interested in this personal intercessory ministry that happens each Sunday during the Communion at the 10:30 Eucharist. This group will be gathering for ministry planning and for reviewing and renewing the vision and purpose of the Sunday Morning Prayer Ministry. The new series on “Stories of Faith” continues on June 29.
