Guest Preacher and Teacher on Sunday

This coming Sunday we welcome Dr. Kathryn Rickert as guest preacher at our morning liturgies. Kathryn Rickert, Ph.D., serves as Adjunct Faculty, School of Theology and Ministry, Seattle University, and as a member of the diocesan First Nations Committee since it began 20 years ago.  Kathryn has been actively involved in the planning and preparation for our special guest presenter, the Rev. Mark MacDonald, for the Communion With Creation conference on January 30, 2010.  Kathryn also expresses her creativity in fabric, calligraphy and poetry.  She is addressing the Education Hour adult class as well as preaching at 8:00 and 10:30.

An afternoon at the Intiman presented by the African American Committee of the Diocese of Olympia. You're invited to a performance of the Black Nativity: A Gospel Song Play by Langston Hughes and a lunch reception celebrating the ministry of Bishop Nedi Rivera. Lyric Arts Ensemble November 21

Lyric Arts Ensemble  Next weekend: November 21 @ 7pm.  Next Saturday evening, our Emmanuel's Resident Artists, the Lyric Arts Ensemble, with 16 voices and chamber orchestra, return to begin their eleventh season.  “Ding! Dong! Merrily!...”  is the theme for the early Christmas concert.   The ensemble is conducted by Kenneth L. DeJong, familiar face to musicians at Emmanuel   His choir from Saint Andrew’s Lutheran in Bellevue has joined with our choir for a musical event for the past nine years, and will again in December.

 

Saturday’s program includes music from “tango to bolero”, as well as music from the baroque, renaissance, and contemporary images of carols we all know and love.  Themes range from Advent through Christmas and the New Year.  Their programming is always interesting and provides fine musical entertainment to this audience.  The concert begins at 7pm.

 

This concert brings a crowd.  Invite your friends, and come early for best seating.  Support our Resident Artists with your presence.  Why would you not do this?  Jump-start your Christmas celebration.

Advent Wreaths on November 22

All Ages Christian Formation at 9:15 on November 22. Come join other members of the congregation in preparing for Advent. We'll have advent wreaths and all the greenery you'll need. There'll be a basket on the table for a $5 suggested donation to help offset costs. We'll gather in the narthex.

St. Nick Fest December 6, 3:30

St. Nick Fest (and St. Nick himself) returns to Emmanuel on the Feast of St. Nicholas December 6 at 3:30. We'll gather in the church for a brief worship service and a visit by St. Nicholas. We'll then go to the Parish Hall for refreshments. All children of the congregation are invited, as are grandchildren, friends and neighbors of parishioners. Please let Arienne or Hunt know if you are bringing guests. This is one of those events we should invite those who are searching for a church to call home.

Mission to Seafarers Needs Your Help

Each year during the Christmas season Episcopalians in the Diocese of Olympia say thank you to the seafarers on merchant vessels calling at the Port of Seattle by giving them Ditty Bags. These are filled with practical items that convey the love, concern, and compassion of our local churches to the seafarers working to bring us the items we use and wear on a daily basis.

 

During November, we’ll be collecting the following items to be used in the Ditty Bags: Deodorant, shaving cream, toothpaste (5.6-6.2 oz), shampoo (16 oz bottles), small New Testaments or Gospels of John. And we can always use playing cards, disposable razors, toothbrushes (single packs only), bar soap, pens/pencils, notepad. Please leave the items in the box marked “Mission to Seafarers” in the narthex. Note: The mission cannot use hotel size toiletries for Ditty Bags but will pass these along to other agencies who can use them.  Personal notes and Christmas cards to the seafarers are always welcome!

 

Poinsettias and Wreaths

Emmanuel Day School Poinsettia and Wreath sale is underway. Beautify your home this holiday season with poinsettias, noble firs wreaths, centerpieces and door swags. Pick up an order form at the Emmanuel welcome center in the Narthex. Orders and checks made out to EDS can be mailed or delivered to the EDS office. Orders must be received by Monday November 9th and plants can be picked up on Monday, December 7th in the Parish Hall. This is a major fundraiser for EDS, please purchase your plants with us! Cursillo weekends are offered in our Diocese every spring and fall, separately for men and women. The dates of upcoming cursillos in the spring of 2010 are April 29-May 2 for men (Bellingham) and May 13-16 (Kent) for women.

Death of John Sundberg

Mr. Sundberg, who along with his deceased wife Gloria, was a longtime member of this congregation. Since leaving Mercer Island, he had been living near his son and daughter-in-law in Seattle. A reception to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, October 30th, at the Seattle Yacht Club, 1807 E. Hamlin St., from 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Celebrating Beverly's life profession

On Friday, November 6, the people of Emmanuel are invited to celebrate with Beverly Hosea on the occasion of her Silver Jubilee, the 25th anniversary of the profession of life vows in the Third Order, Society of St. Francis, in a Eucharist at 7:00 PM for the renewal of vows, the Rt. Rev. Nedi Rivera presiding.  Reception following.

Soup Group Goodies and Invitation to Join

The Soup Group would like to remind everyone that there are some very tasty soups available in freezer in the Narthex kitchen.  As our ministry, we make the soups to be taken to those at home due to illness, mourning or just need a little extra help with a meal and a visit from a parishioner.  Please sign the tablet on top of the freezer letting us know recipient.  If you would like to join Soup Group, we meet the third Friday of the month at 9:15 am in the Parish Hall kitchen, September through June.  We have a fun time and new members and guests are very welcome! Sue Paulson

12 Week Meditation Group

Community of the Lamb 12 Week Group continues the Tuesday night meditation gatherings and starts a new twelve week series for introducing the meditational practice of the Prayer of the Lamb.  Each session includes meditation, reflection and guidance for personal practice, and Gospel study.  Register is still open: by phone, 206-713-5321, or email, PrayeroftheLamb1@mac.com.  Both courses offered through the Community of the Lamb are supported by donations.

Bible Study on Mondays

Lost in Translation: A Biblical Spirituality Course starts Monday, October 26, 9:45-11:15 AM, meeting in the Teen Center for 12 sessions.  This course is offered through the Community of the Lamb and facilitated by our associate priest Beverly Hosea.  Each session includes a period of meditation as well as scripture study.  Register is still open: by phone, 206-713-5321, or email, PrayeroftheLamb1@mac.com.
